THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE SOLUTION®
SERVO FEEDS
COE Press Equipment uses a scientific approach to ensure their servo feeds meet customer needs, focusing on factors that impact performance. They begin by considering the material's width and thickness to determine the necessary pulling power. The presence of a pit, which adds weight to the slack loop, and the length of the die, which increases friction, are also factored into the calculations. By analyzing the required feed length, degrees of feed angle, and strokes per minute (SPM), COE can determine the operational speed. All this data is fed into a proprietary formula to ensure the selected servo feed's motor torque and speed capabilities are well within a safe operating range, guaranteeing reliable and efficient performance that exceeds the customer's requirements.

WHAT IS A TAILOUT FEED?
A Tailout Feed—also known as a micro-feeder or secondary feeder—is a compact, precision feeder designed to handle the end portion, or “tail,” of a coil strip during the stamping process. Its primary role is to ensure material is fully utilized by feeding the remaining coil length into the die, minimizing scrap and improving yield.
Tailout Feeds are typically used in progressive and blanking operations. They retract during die changeover for safety and convenience, and then extend close to the die area during production to continue feeding material. This design eliminates the need to discard the last portion of a coil simply because it’s harder to feed accurately with a standard roll feed.
COE offers several styles of Tailout Feeds:
-
Standard Tailout Coil Feed: Rolls telescope over the bolster to minimize scrap
-
Magnetic Conveyor Style: Uses electro-magnetic conveyors to index coil strips
-
Overhead Roll Style: Positioned at the edge of the bolster, ideal for transfer press retrofits
Tailout Feeds improve material usage, increase operator safety, and help achieve consistent, reliable feeding even at the end of the coil. They are especially valuable in operations where every inch of material counts.
WHAT IS A ZIG ZAG FEED?
A Zig Zag Feed is a specialized servo-driven feeder that moves coil material both forward and side-to-side in a coordinated, programmable pattern. This dual-axis movement enables stampers to nest parts more efficiently within the strip, significantly reducing material waste.
COE’s Zig Zag Servo Feeds are designed for operations like circular blanking, deep draw stampings, and progressive dies where lateral shifting is essential. The feed direction and width of each “zig” and “zag” can be precisely controlled, allowing optimal placement of each part along the coil.
Paired with ServoMaster Touch™ controls, Zig Zag systems offer:
- Fully programmable feed length and lateral displacement
- Automatic optimization of stroke timing and feed window
- Greater material utilization and lower scrap rates
- Faster part production with repeatable accuracy
Zig Zag Feeds are a smart investment for high-volume manufacturers looking to reduce costs while maintaining tight tolerances and cycle times.
